Twitters Outrage on Madison Cawthorn’s speech on anti-abortion
The topic of abortion is one that is sensitive to talk about. After the court ruling the law of Roe v. Wade, the right to protect a women’s choice wether or not to have an abortion, was passed in 1973, the battle for women’s rights to choose wether or not to have an abortion has been an on going debate discussed by many around the world. On December 1, 2021, Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina has had people outraged on Twitter by his House Floor speech about abortions.
Cawthorn’s speech began with a hypothetical thought, he compared a fetus being aborted to a Polaroid picture being ripped up before it could fully develop. He had undertones targeted at women, calling them Earthen Vessels, but interpretation is up in the air since no one can really understand who or what he is referring too. He had also written passages in from the bible, bringing in a religious standpoint to his speech, which was also a big factor for the outrage on twitter. Readers can listen to his speech which is linked above from his own twitter account.

While viewing the replies to his video, I had found some interesting responses and truly saw how people had thought about his speech. Some comments had their own thoughtful feelings while others used memes or cartoon depictions of the situation.
Twitter user Rachel Carmona, the executive director of Women’s March, had stated her opinion and was one to not take Cawthorn’s speech in a good way.
Another Twitter user by the name of ‘AngrySnowMexic1’ had replied to Cawthorn’s tweeted video with a cartoon depiction of the ‘pro-life’ groups reaction before and after a child is brought into the world, showing the drastic difference of how people react to a child who is soon to be born to when they are actually brought into the world. People not only attack the child but also attack the mother or specific parent of said child as well.
Lastly, tweet made by the user ‘wendy_talmage’ responded to Cawthorn’s tweet with a meme, giving a snarky clap back about the content of his speech.
With Twitter having the power to spread information worldwide, it is an easy way for others to interact and also to communicate with people about their own views and to see trending topics.
